>> February 15, 2001 - American artist Jasper Johns was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Barack Obama. It's the first time since 1977 that an artist has been given the honor, when President Gerald Ford awarded it, posthumously, to the sculptor Alexander Calder.
